The impact of sun damage on skin- ageing

The impact of sun damage on skin- ageing

Unprotected sun exposure is the number one cause of premature skin ageing. If you do not  believe this - look at an area of skin that is rarely exposed to the sun and compare to an area of skin that is front and centre when exposed to UV damage.

UVA / UVB.

UV radiation is part of the light spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. It has wavelengths shorter than visible light, which are classified as UVA and UVB rays. Both types of radiation damage the skin in different ways. UVB ( shortwave radiation) these are responsible for burnt, redskin, whereas UVA,(longwave radiation) can penetrate deeper in to the skin and cause DNA damage.

Sun damage can have short and long term consequences, depending on the level of the damage. The immediate visible signs of sun damage is sunburn, redness, dryness, peeling. In more severe cases it may show with blisters, along with nausea and dizziness.

The more long-term consequences of excess sun exposure are dry, uneven skin tone. The skin becomes drier as the levels of essential fatty acids , leaving skin looking dry, flaky and wrinkled over time. Sun damage accumulates causing the rate of cell renewal to slow down, causing a build up of old , dead cells, that result in dull, congested skin. It also causes discolouration, pigmentation .

Sun damage can cause collagen and elastin damage in your skin.

The sun is not all bad - it has lots of health winning properties. Your diet is also important. Eating a diet packed full of antioxidant rich vegetables and fruit to protect your skin from the inside.

Protection is key on the surface to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun every day. It is never too late or too early to start using a SPF.

If you are outdoors for long periods or if you are exercising or sweating a lot , you need to reapply your SPF regularly.

Look for a broad spectrum SPF. Also to protect against environmental damage and UVA you need to add a quality antioxidant vitamin C serum to your morning regime.
